Department Description
The Development Program provides in excess of $50 million in private support annually toward the mission of The Rockefeller University, which is to improve the understanding of life for the benefit of humanity. Working with the Board of Trustees and volunteer groups including The Rockefeller University Council, the Committee on Trust and Estate Plans, and the Women and Science and Parents and Science Initiatives, the Development Office oversees all private fund-raising at the University, including annual, capital, and endowment campaigns.
Detailed Description
The Science Writer will report to and work closely with the Director of Creative Content and Science Support, and will collaborate with the entire development office, as well as interact with other departments of the University. The Science Writer will help to conceptualize, write, design, and implement a diversity of materials to help raise funds and tell compelling scientific stories to a lay audience, including benefactors and prospective donors. Will be responsible for donor reports, proposals, brochures, presentations, invitations, films, and websites. The Science Writer must possess a facility with language and communicate in a variety of formats, including pithy web content, video scripts, and longer concept papers that describe new scientific funding opportunities.
Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree, required; Advanced degree preferred. Four or more years of experience in related fields (e.g., journalism, development writing, grant writing, speech writing, preparation of programmatic materials, such as brochures and websites), is preferred. Must have exceptional attention to detail and deadlines. Strong communication skills (written and verbal), interpersonal skills, and organizational skills required. Must have the ability to work with a diverse personality in a fast-paced environment. A strong interest or background in science is preferred.
