Organization Overview
The ability to speak has allowed our species to pass knowledge between generations, articulate complex ideas, and build societies. Headed by Dr. Erich D. Jarvis, the Laboratory of Neurogenetics of Language uses song-learning birds and other species as models to study the molecular and genetic mechanisms that underlie vocal learning, including how humans learn spoken language. The lab is interested in how their brains, and ours, have evolved to produce this complex behavior.
Overview
We are looking for Research Specialist to oversee our research group investigating methods to develop transgenic birds.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include:
Maintain avian cell cultures in a sterile environment
Perform microscopic egg manipulations including sample collections and injections
Coordinate with husbandry and vet staff to ensure that bird and egg resources are sufficient and timely for experiments
Collect samples from adult finches and perform PCR genotyping
Maintain a detailed and current electronic lab notebook, and a clean and organized lab space
Present data at lab and scientific meetings and prepare manuscripts with results for publication
Qualifications
Required:
Master's degree required, PhD preferred
Educational emphasis in Developmental Biology, Stem Cell Biology, Genetics, or a related field
Cell culture experience
Preferred:
Previous experience with embryonic manipulations of any species highly preferred
Experience with immunohistochemistry and/or in situ hybridization
Experience with CRISPR gene editing and/or viral-mediated transfections
Experience with single-cell sequencing
Knowledge of germ cell biology
Previous experience managing trainees in a laboratory environment
