Rockefeller University Research Specialist | Laboratory of Neurogenetics of Language in New York, New York

Organization Overview

The ability to speak has allowed our species to pass knowledge between generations, articulate complex ideas, and build societies. Headed by Dr. Erich D. Jarvis, the Laboratory of Neurogenetics of Language uses song-learning birds and other species as models to study the molecular and genetic mechanisms that underlie vocal learning, including how humans learn spoken language. The lab is interested in how their brains, and ours, have evolved to produce this complex behavior.

We are looking for Research Specialist to oversee our research group investigating methods to develop transgenic birds.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintain avian cell cultures in a sterile environment

  • Perform microscopic egg manipulations including sample collections and injections

  • Coordinate with husbandry and vet staff to ensure that bird and egg resources are sufficient and timely for experiments

  • Collect samples from adult finches and perform PCR genotyping

  • Maintain a detailed and current electronic lab notebook, and a clean and organized lab space

  • Present data at lab and scientific meetings and prepare manuscripts with results for publication

  • Master's degree required, PhD preferred

  • Educational emphasis in Developmental Biology, Stem Cell Biology, Genetics, or a related field

  • Cell culture experience

  • Previous experience with embryonic manipulations of any species highly preferred

  • Experience with immunohistochemistry and/or in situ hybridization

  • Experience with CRISPR gene editing and/or viral-mediated transfections

  • Experience with single-cell sequencing

  • Knowledge of germ cell biology

  • Previous experience managing trainees in a laboratory environment
