Department Description

Our laboratory is interested in understanding how bacteria evolve by incorporating DNA sequences from mobile genetic elements or from the environment into their genomes. Our research focuses on the mechanisms that control the traffic of DNA molecules between bacteria.

Detailed Description

Our Laboratory studies the interactions between bacteria and their viruses and focuses on the bacterial adaptive immune system, CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats). The Research Assistant will study how bacteria use CRISPR-Cas systems to acquire immunological memories of viral infection. Responsibilities involve handling bacterial cultures, using molecular biology and genetic techniques (e.g., PCR, cloning), preparing DNA and RNA samples for Next-Generation Sequencing, and protein-nucleic acid biochemistry. Other responsibilities may be assigned based on personal interest and motivation.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree in science required; educational emphasis in life-sciences preferred. Must have lab experience in either microbiology, biochemistry, and/or molecular biology. Excitement about biology and willingness to work both independently and as a part of a team necessary.
