Job Title Laboratory Technician, Molecular Genetics and Immunology

Laboratory / Department Laboratory of Molecular Genetics and Immunology

Department Description

The Laboratory of Molecular Genetics and Immunology is focused on dissecting the cellular and molecular mechanisms governing the generation of antibody specificity and the translation of that specificity into cellular responses. Our work seeks to identify the genetic components that initiate B cell activation upon antigenic challenge, the controls that maintain tolerance both centrally and in the periphery, and the mechanisms that govern the coupling of antibody specificity to effector cell response.

Detailed Description

The Laboratory Technician will perform daily maintenance and care of a large mouse colony. Responsibilities include breeding, weaning, genotyping, histochemistry, and performing surgery on mice. Will prepare DNA samples and perform PCR on established mouse lines. Will also assist researchers with in vivo animal studies involving immunizations, animal bleeding, and possible analysis of harvested animal tissues, as well to work independently on molecular genetic/cell culture experiments needed in the lab. The Laboratory Technician will also coordinate with other lab members working with the mouse colony.

Job Requirements

High School diploma required; college degree preferred. Must have 1-2 years of previous mouse handling and the ability to perform experiments on mice such as injections, tissue harvesting, and bleeding. Knowledge of basic molecular biology skills such as DNA isolation, PCR, and electrophoresis is needed. Must have the ability to multi-task, be well organized, detail-oriented, have excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as excellent computer skills. Must be able to work independently as well as collaboratively.
