Organization Overview

The Rockefeller University Precision Instrumentation Technologies (PIT) Resource Center provides services in multiple disciplines of research engineering. It combines a Makerspace with access to various fabrication and rapid prototyping equipment like different 3D-printing technologies, laser cutting, electronics bench equipment and hand tools. Members of the RU community can sign up for training and subsequently operate the equipment and interfacing software on their own with 24/7-access. In addition, the center hosts heavy, conventional manufacturing equipment like lathes and mills as well as a variety of wood/metal saws to help achieve research goals. The backbone of the 2,700 sq ft center is a state-of-the-art Hermle 5-axis CNC mill. The PIT provides a full service of consultation, design and fabrication handled by expert engineers, mechanics and machinists.

Overview

Precision Instrumentation Technologies (PIT) enables high-end scientific instrument design and fabrication for diverse research applications of the University's 79 Laboratories. Through interactive engagement with Rockefeller scientists, the PIT provides end-to-end service from conceptualization to application of scientific instrumentation. The PIT is staffed by a team with complementary expertise in optical design, mechanical design, and fabrication, electronics design, and precision fabrication. We are looking for a Instrumentation Engineer who will interface effectively with PIT staff and engage directly with research laboratories.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting Rockefeller laboratories by realizing instrument solutions to address specific scientific needs

  • Oversight of and lead trainer for makerspace instruments

  • Providing systems-level integration of different modules, including mechanical, electronic, optical, and software components

  • Engaging with Laboratories to identify and refine instrument designs

  • Efficiently leveraging available local and external fabrication resources as needed

Qualifications

Required:

The engineer should have enthusiasm for and a keen interest in biomedical research and engineering, in particular in the areas of neuroscience, biophysics, biology, physics/optics, bioengineering, and/or electrical engineering.The candidate should be excited to work as an integral member of a small and close-knit team, and willing to take on a broad range of tasks, as needed.

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, optical, systems engineering, or a related field

  • Two years hands-on experience with mechanical workshop machinery including, lathe, milling machines, CNC mills, CAM programs such as Open Mind Hypermill and 3D printers

  • A minimum of 3 years of increasingly responsible roles within a high-end engineering or scientific instrument fabrication environment

  • Excellent organizational skills, outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to create and maintain excellent working relationships in a team environment.

  • Instruction and teaching skills

  • Excellent working experience and knowledge of 3D mechanical design software such as SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, Fusion360 or related software

  • Knowledge and experience with design of basic electronics circuits for hardware control

  • Experience with 3D printing technologies such as FDM, MJP and SLA Printing

  • Experience with efficient outsourcing of electric and mechanical designs, ideally with an established working relationship with several vendors

Preferred:

  • Competency with Hermle CNC mills and Heidenhain control software

  • Knowledge of common scientific programing languages such as Matlab, Mathematica or Python

  • Experience with micro fabrication tools and techniques

  • Technical proficiency with Word, Excel, Power Point, Adobe illustrator or Photoshop highly desired

  • Working knowledge and experience with optical design software such as ZEMEX, OLSO, or related software

  • Knowledge of project workflow tracking software such as ProworkFlow
