Laboratory / Department Comparative Bioscience Center
The Comparative Bioscience Center provides a comprehensive program of animal care in support of the University's in vivo research. The goal of our staff is to provide investigators with the highest level of research support at the lowest cost while ensuring the welfare of the animals used in the research. The center is fully accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC).
The Group Leader will be responsible for the direct oversight of five to six animal husbandry technicians and, in that capacity, will assign rooms to technicians, monitor work activity, and make adjustments to schedules as needed. The Group Leader has regularly scheduled rooms to maintain, including daily care of animals, general health observation, cage changing, room sanitation, provision of food and water, and maintenance of animal records. Additional responsibilities include maintaining consumable supplies as needed by the technicians and investigators, monitoring the physical plant for deficiencies, employee training, and resolving any issues that might arise between technicians, as well as between technicians and investigators.
High School diploma or equivalent required. Must have aminimum certification at the ALAT level. Two years of experience in a researchfacility is preferred, although a two-year college degree can be substituted for one year of work experience. Must be knowledgeable of federal and state laws regulating animal use in research, familiar with standard operating procedures, and able to handle and restrain animals.
Must be able to push/pull carts on weight-bearing wheels weighing a minimum of 500 lbs, lift supplies weighing up to 50 pounds, and tolerate a significant amount of standing, bending, and walking. Must not be allergic to animals, waste products, or bedding. Requirements are subject to change as a result of facility needs.
