Department Description

The mission of Markus Library is to support and enhance the University's research programs and to promote the reputation and influence of the University. Utilizing its own extensive collections in the life sciences that support the research interests of the University, and a wide array of information resources licensed beyond the University, the Library is able to provide the faculty, staff and students scientific information support needed to advance their research goals. Using technology, a variety of collaborative relationships, and networking and outreach activities, the library supports and advances scholarly communication and the advancement of knowledge.

Detailed Description

Reporting to the University Librarian, the Assistant University Librarian will manage the daily operating functions of the Markus Library, including the planning, management, and direction of the library's internal organizational functions: electronic resources, library systems, library collections, user services, administrative duties, and building operations. The Assistant University Librarian will work with the University Librarian to develop library goals and objectives, communicate strategic ideas, and execute the overall vision and mission of the University Library. Will directly manage several of the library's professional staff, perform the duties of the Collections and Resources Management Librarian, representing the Markus Library in the Tri-Institutional consortium regarding issues with cataloging and the Alma/Primo system, and working with the University Librarian to manage the University Repository. Will work with the University Librarian to supervise the physical collections, plan and execute events with the library team, collaborate with university departments to ensure success of library operational projects and facilities, monitor and collect statistics on library collections usage, and evaluate library resources and services and report findings to the University Librarian. Will help develop and enforce appropriate library policies and procedures relating to library operations, set goals and strategic directions for the library, evaluate the effectiveness of library products and services, plan for improvements in technologies and services, and motivate, organize and mentor staff. Alongside the University Librarian and the Science Informationist(s), the Assistant University Librarian will work to communicate library services to the RU community and garner feedback on library services from the RU community. Will research and evaluate trends in library services and technologies selecting, where appropriate, those for further study or pilot programs. Will work with the University Librarian to appoint staff to execute goals and objectives, monitor progress, and provide support, as well as participating on project teams.

Job Requirements

MLS or MLIS required; undergraduate degree in life science or related field preferred. Must have demonstrated professional experience and knowledge of a wide range of library services and operational functions, including: cataloging, acquisitions, circulation, interlibrary loan, e-resources, library systems, security, collection management, training, and digital repositories. Detailed knowledge of Alma/Primo system, OCLC cataloging and resource sharing platforms (OCLC Connexion; WorldCat), and cataloging and metadata standards and practices (Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, RDA, FRBR, Library of Congress Classification and subject headings, MESH subject headings, Dublin Core) required. Must have knowledge of Institutional Repository systems management, administration, content organization and content discovery, copyright law and licensing agreements, and Interlibrary Loan systems, standards and policies (OCLC Firstsearch, DOCLINE). Must have effective team and project management skills, strong interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility, strong communication skills, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities. Must be able to work well with all levels of University personnel and work quickly, accurately, and independently.
